Nextion Serial Display Fail

I finally have chance to experiment with my 7" Nextion display after receiving it. I obtained the example program "compbutton.ino" from the ITEADLIB_NEXTION library. I successfully flashed it to my Photon after it compiled. Cyan is pulsing from the photon. Then, however, nothing occurs. The Nextion's pre-installed demo splash screen is still visible. The date screen appears if I select "slide to unlock" on the screen, but that's all. The Photon returns to the original lock screen if I flash it again.
Indeed, I am certain that I have TX linked to RX and vice versa.
