1. Battery Not Charging or Rapid Battery Drain
Error: The e-bike battery isn’t charging properly or drains quickly after a short ride.
Causes: Issues with the battery management system (BMS), poor connections, incorrect charging settings, or aging batteries.
Solution: Ensure proper connections are made, check for damaged wires, and replace the battery if it’s too old. Use a charger compatible with the battery’s voltage and capacity. If the BMS is malfunctioning, it may need recalibration or replacement.
2. Motor Not Responding or Jerky Movement
Error: The motor doesn’t engage or runs in a jerky, inconsistent manner.
Causes: Motor controller issues, faulty wiring, sensor problems, or improper motor calibration.
Solution: Double-check wiring connections, especially between the motor and the controller. Inspect the motor’s sensors (hall sensors) and ensure they’re working properly. Recalibrate the motor if needed.
3. No Pedal Assistance (PAS) or Throttle Response
Error: The pedal assist system (PAS) or throttle doesn’t respond, or power isn’t provided when pedaling or throttling.
Causes: A malfunctioning PAS sensor, throttle issue, or controller failure.
Solution: Test the PAS sensor (using a multimeter) to see if it’s sending the correct signal to the controller. If the throttle is unresponsive, check its wiring and connections. Replacing a faulty controller may also resolve the issue.
4. Overheating of Controller or Motor
Error: The motor or controller overheats during use, leading to power loss or malfunction.
Causes: Excessive load on the motor, insufficient cooling, or incorrect controller settings.
Solution: Ensure the motor is rated for the terrain and usage you intend, and avoid overloading the motor. Adding extra cooling to the motor or controller (e.g., heat sinks or fan systems) can help. Also, check the controller’s settings to make sure they match the motor’s specifications.
5. Brakes Not Engaging or Spongy Brake Feel
Error: The brakes don’t respond properly, or there’s a spongy feel when pulling the brake lever.
Causes: Low brake fluid (for hydraulic brakes), air in the brake lines, or worn brake pads.
Solution: Check the brake fluid levels and top up if needed. If the brakes are hydraulic, bleed the brake lines to remove air bubbles. Ensure that brake pads aren’t excessively worn and replace them if necessary.
6. Display/Controller Not Powering On
Error: The e-bike display or controller doesn’t turn on, leaving you unable to monitor the bike’s status.
Causes: A blown fuse, poor wiring, or faulty connections to the display/controller.
Solution: Inspect the fuse (if applicable) and wiring for any loose or disconnected connectors. Ensure the controller is getting power from the battery, and check the connections between the display and controller.
7. Wheel Speed Sensor Not Working
Error: The speed sensor or cadence sensor isn’t working, leading to inaccurate speed readings or PAS issues.
Causes: Misalignment of the sensor, damaged or dirty sensor, or faulty wiring.
Solution: Check the alignment between the sensor and the magnet on the wheel or pedal. Clean the sensor and the wheel magnet to remove any dirt or debris. If the sensor is damaged, it may need to be replaced.
8. Cut-Off Issues (Motor Stops Abruptly)
Error: The motor cuts off suddenly, leaving the rider without assistance mid-ride.
Causes: Overheating, overloading, loose connections, or battery issues.
Solution: Check the battery charge and connections to ensure the bike is receiving proper power. Inspect the motor and controller for overheating. Ensure the system is not overloaded and that the throttle and PAS are functioning correctly.
9. Chain Issues (Skipping, Slipping, or Falling Off)
Error: The chain skips, slips, or even falls off during rides.
Causes: A misaligned derailleur, improperly adjusted gears, or worn-out chain and sprockets.
Solution: Align the derailleur properly and adjust the gear shifting. If the chain or sprockets are worn, replace them. Ensure the bike is on the correct gear setting for the conditions you are riding in.
10. Unstable or Wobbly Ride
Error: The bike feels unstable, wobbly, or difficult to control, especially at higher speeds.
Causes: Incorrect tire pressure, misaligned wheels, or suspension issues.
Solution: Check tire pressure to make sure it’s within the recommended range. Inspect the wheels for any bending or misalignment. If the bike has suspension, ensure it’s correctly adjusted for your weight and riding style.
