Hello, can someone please help me with the range of NRF24L01 Transceiver Module. And does attaching or not attaching the antenna affect the range?
How is NRF24L01 different from NRF24L01+PA+LNA?
NRF24L01 Transceiver Module Range
The NRF24L01 module has a range of about 100 meters in open space and does not come with an external antenna. In contrast, the NRF24L01+PA+LNA is an advanced version of the NRF24L01 with an external antenna, offering a range of approximately 1000 to 1100 meters. This module is highly effective for wireless data transmission using Arduino and ESP32. Without an antenna, the NRF24L01+PA+LNA can operate within a range of 100 meters but may experience overheating, highlighting the importance of using an antenna to optimize performance and reduce potential interference.
The main differences between the NRF24L01 and NRF24L01+PA+LNA modules are:
Transmission Power and Range:
NRF24L01: Operates at 0 dBm (1 mW) transmission power, with a typical range of up to 100 meters in open space when used with a suitable antenna.
NRF24L01+PA+LNA: Includes a Power Amplifier (PA) and a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA), allowing it to operate at higher transmission powers (up to +20 dBm or 100 mW). This results in a significantly extended range, typically around 1000 to 1100 meters in open space when using the included external antenna. The PA boosts the signal strength for longer distances, while the LNA improves sensitivity for better reception.
Antenna:
NRF24L01: Does not come with an external antenna by default. It may have a built-in PCB trace antenna or require an external antenna to be added separately.
NRF24L01+PA+LNA: Comes with an external antenna (typically a higher gain antenna) to maximize range and performance.
Application and Use:
NRF24L01: Suitable for short-range wireless communication applications where power consumption is a concern, such as in simple sensor networks or remote controls.
NRF24L01+PA+LNA: Ideal for applications requiring longer-range communication, such as in outdoor sensor networks, remote monitoring systems, or applications where obstacles or distance require stronger signal transmission.

In my opinion, the NRF24L01's range can vary a lot. A good antenna can definitely help, and the +PA+LNA version is like a turbocharged version with better power and sensitivity.
You’re right, the difference between NRF24L01 and NRF24L01+PA+LNA is huge, especially regarding range. If you need long-range and stability, the version with the antenna is definitely the better choice. Without an antenna, you risk overheating the module, which can lead to instability.
Remember to always use the external antenna with NRF24L01+PA+LNA. It not only boosts the range but also protects the module from overheating.
