Seeking Advice on Building Transmitter and Receiver for Custom Drone Project

I'm planning to build both a transmitter and receiver for a drone that I'm also constructing from scratch. Since I don't have extensive knowledge in this area, could you help me with some suggestions for components and other aspects of the project?
