Some questions about VR game production

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to design a simple VR game featuring my younger brother as a birthday gift. I read that 3D scanners can help with character modeling, so I found a suitable product and scanned my brother to create his model. However, I've hit a snag. While I now have the 3D model, I have no idea how to animate it, let alone make it interactive. There's a long way to go from having a static model to a fully functioning game.

So, I'm reaching out to ask for advice. What steps do I need to take after obtaining the 3D model? Are there any tutorial videos or articles that can guide me through this process? If it's too complicated to create the entire game, could someone please tell me how to make the model perform some basic movements? My backup plan is to create a video of his 3D model dancing as a birthday gift if I can't manage to develop the game.

I do have experience in this matter. your OBJ model first needs to be rigged. Thankfully you can use autorig tools like mixamo for basic needs, they also have free animations which include fighting and dancing and walking etc. That is the animation part, easy right. Now slightly challenging one, interactive part. You will need to go through a bunch of tutorials for the game engine you choose. Lets assume you used Unreal engine (bcz it is free and works great for AAA graphics but unity is also great for vr games). If you are not much familiar with coding in c++ then you can use Blueprints (unreal engine's visual coding) for programming part. You will get template for VR game to do basic things, like picking up objects and shooting yellow ball like projectiles from ugly guns (which you can replace with your own models with little tinkering). Still easy, you can also develop nice looking environments in unreal engine which will take some effort but its more like pick and place, lighting will be a bit difficult without proper tutorials, so hit youtube for that. So far not much problem, things get harder when it comes to interactive part, like making intelligent enemy, interactive objects etc. Still its doable but takes lot of time, motivation and efforts. If you are short on time then may be you can make an customized environment (if you are using Meta quest 2), there are even tutorials available for that and wont require much time. You can make statute of your brother in an island like statue of liberty or having him dance with other people which goes in loops. Wont require much effort or coding and still will be cool. If you find your self stuck at any point feel free to ask.
