Building an Autonomous Obstacle-Avoiding RC Drone

Im working on a project to build an autonomous RC drone that can avoid obstacles on its own. The idea is for it to fly through tricky areas without needing me to control it. I’m using an Arduino/ESP32 to control the drone, and a Raspberry Pi with a camera to detect objects in its path.
I could really use some help -
What sensors work best for obstacle detection. (I’m thinking of using ultrasonic, but is there anything better)
How to make sure the drone processes the information quickly so it doesn’t crash.
Any cool features or ideas you think I should add to this drone?
I’m also planning to add GPS for navigation and a return-to-home function. Has anyone done something similar?
AI Models- How can I optimize the drone's decision-making for quick reactions?
