I am using modules such as an HC-05, does this give me a disadvantage in the final judgement? Is a physical transmitter only what is allowed?

If you're using HC05 which is bluetooth module. But in place of making a transmitter, if you plan to use your mobile phone and a app to control the car, then yes. You'll be in a slight disadvantage.
